Why Should I believe in God?

Anthropic Principle – Fine Tuning Argument

All the seemingly arbitrary and unrelated constants in physics have one strange thing in common; these are precisely the value you need if you want to have a universe capable of producing life”

The odds against a universe like ours emerging out of something like the big bang are enormous. I think there are clearly religious implications” Stephen Hawking

– Values of all these constants could be anything. Let’s look at some of them:

Cosmological Constant = energy density of the vacuum of space. Responsible for the expansion rate of the universe.

“It’s remarkably well adjusted in our favour”

Steven Weinberg (Nobel winning physicist).

Conclusion is that it is stunningly precise.

If weaker by 1 in 10 to the power of 60 – Universe would collapse.

If stronger by 1 in 10 to the power of 60 expansion would proceed to rapidly for star formation. Both meaning no universe.

Neutrons & Protons

If difference was to increase by 1 part in 700 nuclear fusion would stop = no energy

Atmospheric Gases

02 21% of atmosphere. If 25% fires erupt spontaneously, if 15% we would suffocate.

C02 0.04%

If higher = runaway greenhouse effect = all burn up

If lower = plants unable to maintain photosynthesis = all suffocate

Force which attracts body towards centre of the earth.

Different based on the size of the object – Moon 1/6 gravity of earth.

Again, could be any value

If altered – 0.1% power of 38 would not exist

If stronger = star formation change = no sun

If weaker = star formation less = decreased mass, no heavy essential elements exist for life

Princeton physicist Freeman Dyson suggested that the universe “in some sense knew we were coming”.

Donald Page (Princeton Institute Advanced Study) Calculates odds universe randomly taking form suitable for life as 1 in 10 power of 124.

How big is this number?

All history taken place in 1 in 10 power of 18 seconds.

All stars universe 10 power of 22

Cosmos contains 10 power of 80 atomic particles

All these combined

Final word left to Stephen Hawking’s

“It would be very difficult to explain why the universe would have begun in just this way except as the act of God who intended to create being like us”

When we see complicated and organised design (especially if personally in our own lives), would we accept the suggestion, that this just happened by accident? Clearly not.
